TikTok is where short, real videos catch attention and start conversations. People come here to watch, learn, laugh, and find new ideas, and that’s what makes it a good place for brands to connect. You don’t need a big budget or perfect production to grow an audience. Sharing moments that feel real, helpful, or entertaining is what makes people stop scrolling.
The big change since last year is a more crowded feed. Metricool’s 2026 TikTok Study looked at more than 2.3 million posts from over 92,000 accounts, and the trend is clear. Accounts posted almost 80% more than the year before, and per-post performance dropped across the board. Views, reach, and interactions each fell by close to a third. More content chasing the same attention means every post now works harder for less.
There’s an encouraging side to this, though. The content that reaches people still holds up: engagement rate stayed flat at 3.67%, and the share of people watching videos to the end barely moved. So attention isn’t the hard part anymore. Getting in front of people in the first place is, and that’s what a solid strategy is for. The rest of this guide walks through it.
TikTok is built around short videos people want to watch. That makes it a strong place for brands that want to get noticed and build trust without a huge following or a studio setup.
TikTok runs on discovery. It shows content based on how people react to it, not how big your account is, so a new brand can reach people fast. About 7 in 10 views (72.7%) came through the For You Page in 2026, and it was the one traffic source that held steady while every other source slipped. So the aim is to give the algorithm enough signal to show your content to the right new people, since that’s where growth comes from.
If you’re trying to grow an audience, TikTok leads by a wide margin right now. About 16% of accounts moved up a follower tier in a single year, more than double Instagram’s rate of 8.87%, with every other platform behind both. So if audience growth is the goal, that’s a strong reason to put your time here.
Smaller accounts have the most room to move. More than a quarter of small accounts (2,000 to 10,000 followers) climbed into a higher tier, and 44% of all accounts under 100,000 followers grew over the year. Growth gets tougher past 100,000 followers, so the early stage is when momentum comes easiest.
A few more ways businesses put the platform to work:
Getting started is simple. You can convert an existing personal account or create a new one from scratch. Either way, you get access to analytics, advertising, and planning tools. Setting it up right makes it easier to measure what’s working and grow from there.
If your brand already has a TikTok profile, switching it over is fast.
Once you’ve converted, you’ll get analytics for tracking video performance, a commercial music library for safe audio use, link-in-bio options, and other TikTok Business tools. Small brands and freelancers often find these enough to plan content and test ideas without outside software.
The TikTok Business Suite (also called Business Center) lets you manage multiple accounts, campaigns, and team members in one place. It’s useful if you’re running ads, selling through TikTok Shop, or working with collaborators.
The Suite keeps all your marketing activity in one view, which makes it easier to see what’s working and collaborate without juggling separate logins. Even small teams get value from the added organization.
Business accounts give brands both control and insight. The main features include:
A personal account works for experimenting, posting on the fly, or growing a small following without ads. It’s low pressure and flexible.
A business account is the better fit if you want to track performance, run ads, sell products, or use TikTok’s full set of marketing tools. Starting there gives your brand a base to grow from, measure results, and connect with your audience without guessing what works.
A strong TikTok strategy balances brand, performance, community, and commerce. It starts with clear goals, a real sense of your audience, and content that connects.
Decide what you want TikTok to do for your brand, and pick 1 or 2 main goals per quarter. Common ones include:
Then define the metrics that show progress: video views and average watch time, profile visits, engagement rate, click-throughs, add-to-cart or purchases, and audience sentiment. Knowing your priorities makes it easier to spend time on the content and campaigns that matter. Metricool’s analytics pull these into one place so you can see what’s working and what needs a change.
TikTok is a discovery platform, so knowing who you’re talking to shapes everything. Use tools like TikTok’s Next Report, Market Scope, and Insights Spotlight to see which topics, formats, and trends your audience reacts to.
From there, build content pillars to guide your posts:
Pillars keep your messaging consistent while giving you room to try new trends.
Posting more isn’t the fix it might seem like. Across the whole platform, accounts published far more in 2026, and per-post views, reach, and interactions all dropped by roughly a third. Video accounts posted about 2.5 times a week on average. A steady rhythm of 3 to 5 posts a week is a reasonable target, and it’s worth watching your own numbers rather than chasing volume for its own sake.
Video pulls far more attention than anything else on TikTok. It gets about 5.6 times more views and 7.8 times more interactions than images or carousels. There are about five videos for every static post, so people open the app expecting to watch, and a photo post has to earn its spot fast.
A few things that help video connect:
Carousels are the exception worth knowing about. On average they underperform video, but a handful of accounts across very different niches get strong results from them. The trick is treating the first slide like a headline, giving something useful on every slide, and building content people want to save, like checklists or step-by-step breakdowns.
Think of TikTok as a search engine as much as a feed. Clear, human keywords in captions, on-screen text, and hashtags help people and the algorithm find your content.
Hashtags were the surprise this year. Traffic from hashtags more than doubled, up 114% over 2025, one of the few sources that grew while the feed got more crowded. Adding even one hashtag lifts views by about 5% and interactions by close to 10%. Random tags don’t do much, though. Skip broad ones like #fyp or #viral and pick specific, descriptive tags that tell the algorithm what your post is about. Fewer works better here: stick to 1 or 2, and cap it at 5.
Timing matters more than the day you post. The strongest window for views is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with 8 p.m. as the peak, and performance stays about the same across days of the week. Posting when your audience is most active gives your content a real head start. These are global averages, so check your own analytics for times that fit your audience. You can also stretch a top-performing video further by turning it into a Spark Ad or resharing it as a Reel or Short.
TikTok makes it simple to turn content into action. If you sell products, TikTok Shop, subscriptions, and live shopping let people buy right in the app. For service or B2B brands, use your link-in-bio or lead forms to collect emails and inquiries. With Metricool Smartlinks, you can track clicks and see which posts drive traffic, so you know what’s working before you plan the next round.
Watching what competitors do can show you what connects with the audience you share. Look at their most engaging posts, the topics their followers talk about, and the gaps where your brand can add something they don’t. Metricool can track competitor performance and engagement trends, giving you a clearer read on where to stand out.
Active engagement builds both loyalty and visibility, and the data points to a few specific moves.
Beyond that, reply to comments, join trends that fit you, and reshare user-generated content. UGC works because it shows real experiences and gives you content to reuse. The more you show up, the more both your audience and the algorithm notice.
A TikTok post has a short runway. Within the first 10 days, a post reaches about 96% of its total reach and nearly all of its interactions. That’s the window when the algorithm tests it with different audiences, and after that, growth is mostly residual. So you can judge how a post did within a week and a half, learn from it, and move on rather than waiting for a slow burn that almost never comes.
Review performance often in Metricool or TikTok Analytics to see what connects and where you can improve, then adjust your content pillars, schedule, and engagement approach. This steady loop of planning, posting, engaging, and reviewing keeps your strategy current and helps your brand grow.
