As companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Alibaba compete to develop increasingly advanced models, governments and organizations are seeking greater control over their data, infrastructure, and technological resources. This trend is creating new opportunities for the software, data center, semiconductor, and digital services industries.READ ALSO. As ChatGPT, Gemini, and artificial intelligence attract millions of users, their electricity and water consumption surgesAccording to the report Sovereign AI 2026: Infrastructure, Investment, and Strategy, published by Statista, the global sovereign artificial intelligence market could reach a value of between $500 billion and $600 billion by 2030, compared with an estimated $150 billion to $200 billion in 2025.These projections, based on information from McKinsey & Company, GlobalData, and IDC, indicate that potential demand could roughly triple in five years, driven by the need to reduce dependence on foreign providers and ensure greater control over technology. However, growth will not be evenly distributed. Infrastructure and computing capacity will account for the largest share of demand, while artificial intelligence models, data, and development tools will experience some of the fastest expansion.Statista’s report identifies three major technology segments that will account for sovereign artificial intelligence demand in the coming years. The first is infrastructure and computing capacity, whose potential market could grow from between $100 billion and $160 billion in 2025 to a range of $250 billion to $280 billion by 2030.This segment includes the resources needed to develop and operate advanced systems, including data centers, processing infrastructure, and related technology services. The second segment consists of applications and use cases, where demand could increase from between $35 billion and $40 billion in 2025 to a range of $150 billion to $180 billion by 2030.Finally, the AI models, data, and tools segment would experience the fastest proportional growth, expanding from between $6 billion and $8 billion to potential demand of between $100 billion and $140 billion. This means its market could expand approximately 17-fold, according to the estimates compiled by Statista. These figures represent the potential market for each segment and do not necessarily add up to the industry’s total projected value. The growth of artificial intelligence is increasing the need for physical infrastructure capable of storing information and running models that require substantial processing power.According to Statista, the United States had 4,423 data centers as of June 2026, far exceeding the United Kingdom, with 555; Germany, with 523; and China, with 369.This concentration highlights the advantages enjoyed by countries with established infrastructure, but it also presents a challenge for those seeking to develop their own capabilities. In the artificial intelligence chip market, the United States could generate $18.6 billion in revenue during 2026, while China could reach $11.2 billion.Access to advanced semiconductors is essential for training and operating AI models, making supply security a key component of technological sovereignty strategies. In addition, the study projects that global demand for data center capacity will reach 220 gigawatts by 2030, of which 156 gigawatts would be allocated to artificial intelligence workloads.Although infrastructure and software represent the main commercial opportunities, some industries are showing greater progress in adopting technological sovereignty strategies.According to a maturity index developed by Accenture and cited by Statista, the aerospace and defense industry leads the global ranking with 67 points, followed by government and the public sector, with 64.Healthcare ranks third with 60 points, while banking scores 58 and capital markets reach 55.Other notable sectors include automotive, with 54 points; communications and media, with 53; life sciences, with 53; and insurance, also with 53.These sectors share a strategic need: protecting sensitive information, ensuring operational continuity, and reducing risks associated with technological dependence. As a result, sovereign artificial intelligence could drive investment in specialized platforms, data protection systems, and models tailored to the regulatory requirements of each industry.Expected market growth is also reshaping investment priorities.According to Statista, 83 percent of surveyed investors consider AI sovereignty a strategic imperative, a higher percentage than that recorded among businesses, governments, and technology providers. However, building independent capabilities comes with additional costs. The report indicates that more than half of respondents expect sovereign AI models and hardware to cost at least 20 percent more than non-sovereign alternatives. This requires organizations to assess which systems need greater control and where continuing to use services from international providers may be more practical.Despite these barriers, growth projections indicate that sovereign artificial intelligence is becoming a business that extends far beyond the development of applications and virtual assistants.
