CHENNAI: Meta is planning to introduce a new paid subscription model for WhatsApp, allowing users to access an ad-free service, a move that has come as a surprise to millions of users worldwide.
As part of efforts to increase revenue from WhatsApp, Meta had earlier announced the introduction of advertisements on the platform. Accordingly, ads have begun appearing between WhatsApp Status updates, which many users have found intrusive at times, said a Daily Thanthi report.
In response to these concerns, Meta is now reportedly planning to roll out a paid subscription option that will offer an advertisement-free experience. According to reports, the service is expected to be launched initially in European countries at a price of around €4 (approximately ₹433).
Further details regarding the rollout timeline and availability in other regions are yet to be officially announced.
