Brazil advances in the use of AI, but Shadow AI exposes emerging risks in companies – TI INSIDE Online

Brazil has surpassed the global average in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a new global survey by Google and Ipsos. In 2024, 54% of Brazilians reported having used generative AI, while the global average was 48%. What’s more, three out of four Brazilians interviewed (78%) said they use AI at work and 88% of those interviewed consider the use of AI to be essential for dealing with complex information and finding innovative solutions to business challenges.
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing to light a phenomenon we have already seen in other technological eras: Shadow IT. However, the advent of Shadow AI raises the stakes to an even higher level, exposing organizations to vulnerabilities that can compromise both their security and their reputation.
Shadow AI refers to the use of AI tools by employees outside of IT’s direct control, without proper oversight or guidance. While traditional Shadow IT involves the unauthorized use of devices and applications, Shadow AI adds a new layer of complexity: the manipulation of sensitive data within AI platforms, often without understanding the associated risks.
“The advancement of generative AI has democratized access to tools that were previously exclusive to specialists. Today, anyone with a computer and an internet connection can use advanced language models to draft contracts, perform analyses or even develop complex solutions,” explains Rafael Oneda, Technology Director at Approach, an integrator of IT solutions for cybersecurity, connectivity and data center.
The Risks of Shadow AI 
Imagine an employee using a generative AI to prepare a strategic report. In doing so, he or she may inadvertently send confidential data to servers in another country, under different legislation and without any guarantee of protection or confidentiality. This is the classic Shadow AI scenario, where ignorance creates a dangerous breach. In addition, we can mention:

To address this challenge, organizations need to abandon their fear of transformation and take a proactive role, ensuring that AI is a strategic ally and not a source of risk,” Oneda emphasizes.
