Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be one of the most advanced open-world games to date, coming with some features that will set it apart from the competition fueled by an “unlimited development blueprint”, including a “next generation procedural breakable glass system for vehicles and props” that is sure to push the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware considerably.
“Took lead on the next generation procedural breakable glass system for vehicles and props,” wrote a programmer who worked at Rockstar Games from February 2020 until April 2023 on LinkedIn, as spotted by Reddit user esketitethan. Said programmer, who has since removed the information, also worked on other Grand Theft Auto 6 features:
While any news on Grand Theft Auto 6 is more than welcome, considering how little Rockstar Games has shown of the game since its announcement in December 2023, one may find these new tidbits not particularly exciting. However, they still are for a good number of reasons.
Procedural breakable glass in games is nothing new. Remedy Entertainment’s Control, for example, featured a granularity system in which large objects are divided into smaller chunks that break apart based on the angle of impact. However, Control’s linear world made it easy for Remedy to implement a limit on the number of physics objects on-screen without diminishing the feature’s impact.
With Grand Theft Auto 6’s massive open world, however, Rockstar Games faces more significant challenges, especially with multiple cars on-screen at the same time, whose glass can be broken. Also, this doesn’t account for whether this procedural breakable glass system will be applied to gameplay, which would further increase its complexity. For example, will the broken shards cause damage to tires? Will they affect interiors if the player breaks a window to enter a building?
The possibilities here are endless, but they could be incredibly taxing for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S’s aging hardware. With everything we have been hearing about Grand Theft Auto 6, there’s little doubt how all current generation consoles with their now dated CPUs and GPUs will be pushed to their very limit to deliver all of these advanced features in a massive open-world at acceptable performance, which is now even more unlikely to go past 30 FPS, even on the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro, as most are speculating. If they can handle such a feature well, it will only make it even more impressive
As such, even such a relatively small feature, such as procedural glass breaking, is set to make Grand Theft Auto 6 a true landmark release. Hopefully, it won’t take long to see many of these rumored features in action ahead of the game’s launch on November 19.
