As AI chatbots become popular, tech companies are exploring new ways to monetize them. Lately, rumors suggested that Google might start showing ads in its AI assistant, Gemini, as early as 2026. However, the company has refuted these claims, saying the chatbot is currently ad-free and there are no plans to change that.
A few days ago, Adweek reported that Google had reached out to advertising clients to discuss potential ad placements on Gemini. These conversations were separate from the ads displayed in AI Mode, the tech giant’s AI-powered search feature. The report also noted that the company has not shared formats or pricing details with advertisers.
However, Google has now firmly pushed back against these claims (via Gadgets360). Dan Taylor, Google’s Vice President of Global Ads, responded directly on X. He said, “This story is based on uninformed, anonymous sources who are making inaccurate claims. There are no ads in the Gemini app, and there are no current plans to change that.” His statement now clears up the confusion surrounding Google’s advertising plans for Gemini.
Simply put, Gemini users do not need to worry about ads showing up in the chatbot any time soon. While speculation about future monetization is natural, Google has made it clear that Gemini will remain ad-free for the time being. So why did the rumors spread in the first place? One reason could be the high cost of running an advanced AI chatbot. As of now, Google earns revenue from Gemini through API credits and subscription plans. So some industry watchers may have assumed the company might eventually see advertising as an extra revenue opportunity.
Meanwhile, Google recently rolled out a major update to Gemini Live, a key feature of its AI assistant. The updated version now delivers more natural and realistic conversations, thanks to a deeper understanding of tone and nuance.
