Even More Ads Are Coming to YouTube Premium Lite – How-To Geek

If you’ve been using the internet for a while, it should be common knowledge that when a product is free, you are the product. But what happens when you’re actually paying for it? Google seems to be testing the limits of what paying customers will accept with a recent change to YouTube Premium Lite.
If you opted for YouTube Premium Lite over YouTube Premium, you knew what you were getting into. Fewer ads than free YouTube, but a lighter monthly bill than full YouTube Premium. It probably seemed like a win-win, a nice middle ground between the two extreme ends of the spectrum. Well, Google is about to make it a little less compelling of a proposition.
YouTube Premium offers a compelling package for anyone streaming music and watching videos. It delivers a full YouTube Music subscription, ad-free videos on YouTube, and several additional features like offline playback. However, I want a few more features if I’m going to keep paying for it.
According to an email that Google has sent to subscribers, more ads are coming to the paid Premium Lite experience. Starting June 30, 2025, you’ll begin seeing advertisements on YouTube Shorts, music videos, and when you browse or search. While Google claims “most videos” will remain ad-free, it’s a move that certainly puts a big emphasis on the “lite” in Premium Lite, adding back quite a few of the interruptions you paid to avoid. These changes appear to be worldwide as well.
Thank you for being a Premium Lite member. Premium Lite offers fewer interruptions so you can watch more of the YouTube you love.
We are writing to let you know that beginning 30 June 2025, ads may appear on Shorts, in addition to music content and when you search or browse. Most videos will continue to remain ad-free.
As mentioned, this move certainly changes the value proposition of Premium Lite. While it still offers fewer ads compared to the basic free YouTube experience, and keeps your wallet a little happier than paying for the full Premium subscription, it might leave you wondering if the benefits still outweigh the cost. Regardless of whether you continue paying for Lite, upgrade to full Premium, or just sit through ads on the free tier, Google is getting something from you.

YouTube premium
So what’s the big deal? Amazon Prime has been doing this for several years now. But this trend is a lot older: Cble TV: since you’re paying for it, there will be no ads!
