Fresh ideas from museums around the globe in your inbox each weekEditorial update, 10 October 2026: this guide now focuses on planning and measuring Facebook and Instagram advertising through Meta Ads Manager. Original 2020 screenshots are retained as historical illustrations. Check current account controls and official specifications before launching a campaign. For an exhibition ticket campaign, work backwards from the booking. Choose a relevant audience and geography, make the exhibition dates and offer clear, and send visitors to the page where they can choose their tickets. Agree the test budget and the result that will justify continuing before launch. A low cost per click can look encouraging while producing few bookings, so review completed purchases or enquiries alongside reach and landing-page visits. Check that the ticketing system and campaign reports are describing the same period.Define the museum campaign goal before choosing controls. Awareness, reach, link clicks, landing-page visits and purchases describe different things. A campaign intended to introduce a new exhibition should not automatically be judged by the same measure as one intended to sell its final available tickets.Ads Manager organises work into campaigns, ad sets and ads. The campaign establishes the objective, ad sets organise delivery decisions and the ads contain the creative message. Check where the relevant settings sit in the current setup rather than relying on an old screenshot.Choose the campaign objective, conversion location, event and performance goal that fit the intended result and the measurement you can actually support. Meta’s objective and conversion-settings guidance explains those decisions. A booking campaign needs a reliable booking signal; selecting an objective does not create missing tracking.Historical objective-menu screenshot from the original 2020 guide. The old Awareness, Consideration and Conversion grouping is not a current menu walkthrough. For a hypothetical local exhibition campaign, start with people who can realistically visit while tickets are available. Match the geographic area to the offer and transport context. Confirm which audience controls are currently available in the account; do not assume every historical demographic, interest or behaviour category remains usable.Agree a bounded test budget, campaign period and person responsible for monitoring spend. Daily and lifetime budgets serve different purposes; do not assume a displayed daily figure is an absolute daily spending cap. Review the account’s current delivery rules, available campaign or account limits, billing arrangements and other active campaigns before publishing. Record the actual controls used and when the campaign will be paused or reviewed.Historical cost-control illustration from the original 2020 guide. Verify current budget and bidding controls in the live account.Historical bidding illustration from the original guide. Old bid names and billing instructions have been removed; this diagram should not determine today’s settings.Affordability depends on the outcome and the museum’s resources. A cheap click that never becomes a useful action may be poor value. Avoid increasing spend before you understand the measurement and have enough evidence to make a decision.Choose an image, short video or sequence that explains the exhibition and offer. A carousel presents separate cards; it is not the same format as a slideshow video. Do not assume a format will deliver a fixed uplift for every museum.Preview each placement, including Facebook and Instagram where selected. Keep mobile text readable, caption speech and place important text and faces where interface controls will not obscure them. For vertical video, check the current placement specifications and safe zones in Meta’s Reels advertising guidance. Use current upload specifications instead of the original guide’s file-extension lists.Write the booking call to action so the next step is clear. “Book exhibition tickets” should lead to the correct exhibition and date selection, with the price and important conditions easy to find.Test the journey on a phone, including any move to an external ticketing provider. Confirm the event fires at the intended point and does not double-count purchases. Measure website booking events alongside the advertising platform’s reporting and operational ticket records. Before using tracking, remarketing or customer lists, check the required permissions, consent and lawful handling of the data with the museum’s responsible team. Having an email address or visitor record does not by itself establish permission to upload it for advertising. Check account access, image rights, the landing page and the schedule before launch. For the hypothetical ticket campaign, review completed bookings or qualified enquiries, cost per outcome and revenue where reliable. Record the attribution window and reporting period, then compare platform totals with Analytics and the ticketing system. Differences need investigation; reported conversions are not automatically additional visits caused by the advert.Agree the continuation rule in advance, such as an acceptable cost per booking within the museum’s margin and capacity. If the test misses that threshold, investigate audience fit, the offer, creative, checkout and tracking before spending more. Record what you changed so the next campaign builds on evidence rather than guesswork.Climate change is complex, emotionally charged, and often overwhelming.
