Snap stock is at $5.30 in morning trading, down 11%. The Snapchat parent swung to a profit in Q3 2026, though its daily active users fell short of estimates and subscriptions supplied more of the growth than ads did.Adding to the pressure, Snap is changing how it measures its audience, switching daily active users for monthly active users as its headline metric. Combined with ad growth that management admits is falling short of its goals, the change is giving traders reason to question how durable the turnaround at Snap is.Snap Inc. disclosed on November 4, after the close, that its Q3 revenue rose 14% year over year (YoY) to $1.72 billion. The result came in slightly short of the $1.73 billion consensus estimate, missing expectations. Snap Inc. reported Snapchat daily active users of 495 million, below the 499 million Stocktwits estimate.Profitability told a better story for the company. Net income at Snap reached $56 million, compared with a $104 million net loss a year earlier. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) at Snap Inc. rose to $383 million.Guidance from Snap calls for Q4 2026 revenue of $1.95 billion to $1.99 billion, a range that starts at the $1.95 billion consensus. Management also guided adjusted EBITDA to $490 million to $525 million.Subscriptions are doing the heavy lifting at Snap. The company’s other revenue, led by Snapchat+, Memories Storage and Lens+, jumped 84%, and its paid subscribers passed 30 million. Advertising revenue at Snap Inc. grew just 4%.On the earnings call, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel acknowledged that “advertising revenue growth remains below our ambitions.” Chief Commercial Officer Ronan Harris tied a decline in brand advertising to lower consumer packaged goods spending driven by macro pressures in the U.S. and the Middle East. Harris also pointed to positive signs from categories such as U.S. financial services.Starting with its Q1 2027 results, Snap will make global monthly active users (MAUs) its primary audience metric and MAU-based average revenue per user (ARPU) its main monetization gauge. The company reported 977 million MAUs in Q3. That switch arrives as Snap’s North America daily active users fell 6% YoY.Truist Securities said the change reduces visibility into regional user trends at Snap, adding, “We remain on the sidelines awaiting proof of sustainable ad growth.”Against its closest rivals, Snap’s slide stands out. Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) stock is at $21.11, down 0.5%. October 29 brought Pinterest’s own Q3 report, which missed revenue and earnings estimates.Meanwhile, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) stock is at $631.09, up 0.2%. On October 21, Meta reported that its advertising revenue grew 26%, far ahead of Snap’s single-digit ad growth. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) rounds out the peer group. Quiet moves across Pinterest and Meta point to a Snap-specific selloff.Snap runs a camera-first messaging app built around conversations among close friends, which limits where ads can appear. The company is leaning on Sponsored Snaps in chat, Spotlight video and Promoted Places on Snap Map, plus subscriptions and Specs augmented reality glasses it expects to begin shipping later this fall.Meta runs AI-driven ad ranking across Facebook, Instagram and Threads at a scale few rivals can approach. Pinterest monetizes shopping intent through visual search, where users often arrive planning purchases. Each model gives advertisers a different path than Snap’s chat-centric platform, where direct response now drives most of the business.Regulatory risk adds another layer for Snap, which noted increased regulatory scrutiny on youth-related issues that could force product changes and weigh on user growth. Optimists can point to expanding margins, a growing subscription base and Spiegel’s comment that Snap is “seeing a bit of acceleration on the ad side” in Q4. Bears, meanwhile, see shrinking North American daily users and a reporting change that makes regional trends harder to follow.Snap still needs advertising growth to reaccelerate enough to carry the turnaround. Snap’s first MAU-based report, due with Q1 2027 results, is another thing to watch for. Investors may want to wait until the question of Snap’s ad growth resolves.Contact [email protected] for any questions or corrections.David Moadel is financial writer specializing in stocks, ETFs, options, precious metals, and Bitcoin.
