The end of the traditional conversion funnel and the role of Agentic AI in AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) – Grande Consumo

We are experiencing a paradigm shift in how brands connect with their audiences. Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a tool to support data analysis: it has become the engine that redefines interaction with consumers, enabling dynamic segmentation and high-speed, personalized audience reach. Thanks to the democratization of advanced data modeling techniques, what previously required months of analysis can now be executed in real time, with unprecedented precision. But the real challenge lies not only in speed or scale: it’s in the transition to agentic systems, where the customer’s decision-makers become active brand stakeholders. Understanding human cognitive behavior is no longer enough; it becomes essential to understand the parameters of these agents that mediate discovery and purchase. The decline of the “click” as a central metric signals the end of an era and highlights the increasing complexity of the customer journey with respect to traditional attribution techniques, whether rule-based or data-driven. Traditional metrics no longer capture the true value of advertising. In this new context, advanced methodologies, such as Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) and continuous experimentation milestones, gain critical relevance. Incremental KPIs emerge as a benchmark: they allow for isolating noise and understanding which conversions would not have occurred without a specific effort, measuring the real impact of each channel or campaign on the business. The evolution towards digital agents capable of recommending and making purchases is profoundly transforming the marketing value chain. Consumers are delegating the search function to intelligent systems, shifting the paradigm from an attention economy to an agentic recommendation economy. This shift forces brands to be present precisely where agents interact with users. We are thus witnessing the emergence of sponsored response systems in ecosystems like Gemini or OpenAI, redefining the media mix: it’s not just about driving the user to the website, but about being the agent’s chosen option within their own interface. The trend points towards integrated agentic purchasing, as exemplified by protocols such as the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), where the assistant acts as a transactional executor from start to finish. In this scenario, competition shifts from traditional visibility to objective excellence: competitive prices, superior quality, and tangible benefits that AI agents automatically prioritize when recommending or negotiating. In the classic model, digital marketing was designed to attract the user to a website and convert them at that point of contact. This funnel is changing rapidly. In the new context of Agentic AI applied to e-commerce, the “website” may cease to be the final destination and become merely a structured database, accessible via APIs, that feeds the agents. The consequences are profound. If LLMs, such as Google Gemini or OpenAI systems, begin to mediate and decide on the purchase, traditional SEO loses centrality and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emerges. A brand that is not legible, structured, and trustworthy for these agents simply ceases to exist in the decision-making journey. In practice, this implies a shift in focus from web design to an “API-first” approach. In the context of agentic commerce, the agent doesn’t “see” the site as a human does; it consumes data. Implementing structured data schemas (like Schema.org), detailed product feeds, and robust public APIs ceases to be a technical detail and becomes critical to the business.Imagine a user asking the assistant: “Buy me some marathon running shoes, size 42, with superior cushioning, up to €180”. The agent queries APIs and cross-references attributes in real time. If the brand doesn’t have fields like cushioning, stock availability, or price in a format immediately readable by AI, it will be ignored — regardless of how appealing the website design is.Despite increasing automation, human creativity and intuition remain strategic resources. In a world of infinite machine-generated content, human originality is the scarcest and most valuable factor. The human role evolves into that of “Cognitive Architect” or conductor, whose contribution focuses on ethical intentionality, imagination, and the ability to create something disruptive not yet existing in the training data. Human-in-the-loop ecosystems, like the ones we develop, where AI functions as a strategic co-pilot, freeing human talent to focus on what truly makes a difference in business. It’s about working in symbiosis with the machine, transforming algorithmic efficiency into competitive distinction. The adoption of intelligent marketing will not be homogeneous across sectors. Segments with complex purchasing decisions, such as the automotive, insurance, and financial services sectors, are leading the integration of AI as a “strategic concierge,” assisting the user in high-consideration processes. On the other hand, retail and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) are focusing on creative scale and agentic commerce, with a forecast that 73% of consumers will integrate AI into their purchasing process this year. This approach transforms traditional advertising into assisted relevance integrated directly into the conversation with the user.Preparing for 2026 requires an “Agentic-First” mindset, based on two pillars: data availability and operational efficiency. The brands that will lead the market are those with a robust First-Party Data infrastructure, capable of feeding agentic models in real time. In an environment mediated by intelligent assistants, being “machine-readable” is essential for appearing in user recommendations. Success no longer resides solely in “being present” but depends on the ability to be decipherable and actionable by algorithms.Agencies and advertisers must structure themselves on two fronts: optimizing content to be processed by LLMs and maximizing internal efficiency through intelligent automation. It is within human-in-the-loop workflows that AI identifies segments and produces assets at scale, allowing human talent to focus on strategic curation. In a constantly shifting paradigm landscape, the differentiating value continues to reside in the ability to connect emotionally, but execution is now data-driven and scalable, continuously learning from audience performance and behavior. This overview, detailed in the report “The Marketer’s Confidence Paradox,” conducted with marketing leaders in the Retail and E-commerce sectors, reveals that while 70,4% of marketing leaders are confident that their budgets are being used effectively, 41,6% admit that a significant portion of that investment fails to deliver its full value. This research explores the gap between perceived performance and actual growth, offering a roadmap to bridge this gap and reinforcing that innovation in marketing is not just technological: it is strategic and human.
