ADVERTISEMENTThe next battleground for digital advertising could move beyond social feeds and search results into AI-powered conversations, with Meta's potential entry into conversational advertising threatening to redirect marketing budgets from its own platforms and Google Search. While Meta has not publicly confirmed plans to introduce ChatGPT-style sponsored placements within Meta AI, industry observers believe the company has a strong commercial incentive to explore the opportunity. Its established advertiser relationships, advertising infrastructure and integration across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp could give it a significant advantage in scaling conversational commerce.Speaking to Storyboard18, Ajay Varma, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 0101.Today, said the introduction of advertising within Meta AI would initially result in a redistribution of existing digital advertising budgets rather than generate entirely new spending."Initially, I would expect most of the money to be reallocated rather than genuinely incremental," Varma said.According to him, the first budgets likely to move into Meta AI would come from existing Meta performance advertising and high-intent Google Search campaigns."If conversational inventory can reach someone closer to a decision than a standard feed impression, some money could move out of conventional social inventory. If Meta AI can answer high-intent product questions before a user ever reaches Google Search, some search budget could move as well," he explained. The potential shift comes as AI-powered assistants increasingly become destinations for product research, recommendations and purchase-related decisions, creating a new advertising opportunity around conversational intent.Meta AI advertising remains unconfirmed, but commercial incentives are strongVarma cautioned against treating speculation around Meta AI advertising as a confirmed product development."There is no public confirmation yet of ChatGPT-style ads inside Meta AI itself, so I would distinguish between market speculation and what is already visible," he said. However, Meta's advertising business and growing investments in AI suggest that conversational advertising could become a logical extension of its monetisation strategy.Meta reported revenue of $60.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 28% year-on-year, while advertising impressions increased 14% and the average price per advertisement rose 12%. Its family of applications reached an average of 3.6 billion daily active users in June 2026.According to Varma, Meta's challenge is different from its historical dominance of social media advertising."For years, everyone learned advertising from Meta. In conversational AI, Meta may now have to learn from platforms that got there first," he observed.OpenAI has already introduced advertisements within ChatGPT, including in India, where sponsored placements are displayed separately from AI-generated responses and do not influence the answers themselves. This creates a competitive environment in which Meta would be entering an advertising category shaped by AI-native platforms rather than defining the format from the outset.Meta's bigger opportunity may lie beyond ChatGPT-style sponsored placementsRather than simply replicating sponsored advertisements beneath AI-generated responses, Meta could potentially develop a more integrated advertising model connecting product discovery, social content, messaging and commerce.Varma said Meta's ecosystem could allow users to move from discovering a product on Instagram to seeking additional information through Meta AI and eventually contacting a business on WhatsApp."I would be surprised if Meta simply copied ChatGPT's sponsored-placement model and stopped there," he said.He pointed to a hypothetical consumer searching for a Diwali gift under Rs 5,000. In such a scenario, Meta AI could theoretically connect the user's purchasing intent with products advertised on Instagram, creator recommendations, branded content or a direct business conversation. This would enable Meta to explore a model in which AI-driven recommendations connect with existing commerce and advertiser infrastructure."If Meta only copies the sponsored tile, it will be thinking too small. Its real advantage is the ability to connect discovery, advertising, conversation and conversion across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp," Varma said. For the Indian market, the opportunity could be especially relevant for categories that already rely heavily on WhatsApp for customer engagement, including real estate, education, jewellery, travel and financial services. However, such integrations remain hypothetical, and Meta has not announced an advertising format or commercial rollout for Meta AI.Beauty, BFSI, electronics and travel could lead early advertiser adoptionIf conversational advertising becomes available within Meta AI, Varma expects high-consideration categories to be among the earliest adopters.Beauty and personal care brands could use the format to reach consumers researching ingredients, skincare concerns and product suitability. Consumer electronics advertisers could benefit from audiences comparing specifications, prices and devices before purchasing.Education, financial services, travel, automotive and real estate could also emerge as significant categories because consumers typically undertake detailed research before making purchase decisions.Financial services advertising, however, would require additional caution because of regulatory sensitivities around lending, insurance and investment recommendations. In India, Varma identified advertisers such as Samsung, Nykaa, Tata group businesses, Reliance brands and large BFSI companies as potentially well-positioned to experiment with conversational advertising, provided the formats offer compelling economics. These brands were cited as examples of potential advertisers rather than confirmed participants in any Meta AI advertising programme. The key question, according to Varma, is whether conversational advertising can deliver better-quality consumer outcomes than existing performance marketing channels."The key test will be incrementality," he said. For advertisers, that would mean demonstrating that AI-led placements generate additional conversions or influence purchases that would not otherwise have occurred through existing campaigns.Meta has distribution, but OpenAI holds the AI-native intent advantageAlthough Meta possesses an enormous advertiser network and established advertising technology, Varma believes its competitive advantage is not absolute.OpenAI has already established ChatGPT as a destination for consumers seeking information, conducting research and evaluating options.Meta, meanwhile, has a strong distribution advantage through its existing social and messaging ecosystem."Meta has the advertiser and distribution advantage. OpenAI has the AI-native intent advantage," Varma said.According to him, Meta could potentially scale conversational advertising faster from a commercial perspective because brands are already familiar with its advertising systems and measurement infrastructure. However, the company would still need to demonstrate that consumers see Meta AI as a destination for high-intent queries, rather than primarily using its ecosystem for social interactions and communication."Meta may be able to scale conversational advertising faster commercially, but it still has to prove that users will treat Meta AI as a place to ask high-intent questions in the same way they already do with ChatGPT," he said. From buying audiences and keywords to buying conversational intentThe larger implication of conversational advertising could be a structural change in how digital media budgets are allocated.Traditional social media advertising largely allows brands to reach consumers based on audience characteristics and behavioural signals. Search advertising captures users expressing intent through keywords.Conversational AI introduces another layer, where consumers may describe their needs, budgets, preferences and concerns in natural language before making a decision. For advertisers, the value of such placements could depend on how accurately platforms identify the consumer's decision-making stage and connect it with relevant commercial opportunities.Varma believes this could intensify competition among social platforms, search engines and AI assistants for high-intent advertising expenditure."The competition may no longer be simply Meta versus Google for media budgets. It could become social intent versus search intent versus conversational intent," he said.He added that conversational intent could eventually command a premium if platforms demonstrate stronger conversion outcomes."Meta spent years teaching advertisers how to buy audiences. Google taught them how to buy keywords. AI platforms are now teaching them how to buy relevance to a decision," Varma said. For Meta, a potential move into conversational advertising would therefore represent more than the introduction of another ad placement. It could reshape how brands approach consumer discovery, performance marketing and commerce across digital platforms.Whether such advertising attracts genuinely incremental investments or largely redistributes existing budgets will depend on the effectiveness of the format, consumer adoption and advertisers' ability to measure outcomes.ADVERTISEMENTThe conversation highlighted a fundamental shift underway in the relationship between audiences, platforms and brands.
